No thees and thous, no King James archaic words, just plain old modern English. I've started reading it through, and I'm really enjoying it. The only thing I don't like about the copy I have is that it is written on thin paper which makes it hard to turn. For those who objected to "virgin" being translated "young woman" the translators didn't make that mistake. You can get a nice looking copy from Barnes and Noble and other online bookstores for about $16. The King James Version was published so the readers of that time could read it, but the language has changed so enjoy this new version.
This month I've read the first three books. Genesis and parts of Exodus I've enjoyed more in this translation, but all the description of food preparation, garments for the priests, and the descriptions of the tent for worship in Leviticus seems useless. Nowhere do I see the great compassion of love for one another that Jesus manifested. Thank God we don't have to obey all the rituals the Hebrews did because Jesus took care of us when he died on the cross and did away with animal sacrifices. I feel like expressing my doubt as to whether God gave all the minute details as recorded. I believe God said, "Love one another...Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...etc."

GOD AND JEWS vs GOD AND ARABS

This blog is from a chat line.

I am a Right Wing Republican and I don't have a problem with your posts Mr Butler...You seem to have a nicer way of putting things...

My original post was for fun and humor and it just got out of hand someway...

I don't have a problem with any intellegent post anyone makes...

Most is good information...Whether I agree or not...

Pack, I listened to the Rev. Franklin on TBN this morning. His sermon touted the Jews and their return to the Holy Land. According to the Reverend the world is about to end because the Jews have returned. The world may end because the Jews are back, but the end may come because the Arabs don't want them there. I'm not sure the Jewish people are any more children of God than are the Arabs. What I'm driving at is that I think the misled Right Wing Republicans are causing trouble with their beliefs. I don't want to see the Jews driven out, but I don't want the Arabs hurt because it is believed that God favors them over other people. Read Paul's thought in the Book of Galatians and you will see what I'm driving at. The message there is that God loves all people. I pray that peace might come in the Middle East because Jews and Arabs might learn to tolerate and love each other. The moderate Republican Party has much good, but they are in trouble because of fanatics.

Pack’s post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Jews are not the Chosen People, you are right about that...

It is a lie put forth by the Jews...It is all pretty complicated...

The Jews of today are not the same as Jews of old..

Jesus will have to return to settle the trouble between the Jews and the Arabs...

I don't think it can be settled any other way...

Thanks for the thought...It is interesting...And He does love all who love Him, He even loves those who turned their back on Him...I think He is sad for all that has happened...

Butler: Pack, I love the Bible as a book on the Christian religion, but when a president gets elected by a bunch of Holy Rollers and starts a war with the infidels to please religious people who want him to bring Jesus back by fulfilling obscure prophecies in Daniel and the Book of Revelations you have one hell of a mess. So there has to be one big battle in a valley in Northern Palestine before Jesus comes back so a bunch of greedy religious people scare people into giving them a great deal of money because they are the true believers who knows exactly what God is going to do. Examine the two versions and notice the differences then ask the question: If the prayers were dictated to the writers why aren't they exactly the same?

9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11Give us this day our daily bread.
12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3Give us day by day our daily bread.
4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. type='text'>WERE THE ROMANS QUEER?

Romans 1:1-31 Paul butters the Roman church up by telling them what great Christians he has heard that they are. v.16 He makes the famous speech about that he is not ashamed ...of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and then he goes into his famous denouncement of homosexual, both women and men. I wonder if this tirade made the Roman Christian's angry? Why did Paul put this message in a letter to the Romans? The Greeks would have probably deserved this message more for they thought sex with women was to make babies. Sex with another man was the enjoyment! From what I've read the common Roman man or woman were not inclined to engage in same sex activities. This was not true of the rich who held orgies. What Paul describes in this same sex scene must have taken place in a pagan temple where idols were being worshipped. To read about one of these rituals, click http://books.iuniverse.com/booksfold...81060_0079.GIF
Oddly enough when pagans were condemned for their sexual preferences, they would answer, "We don't mutilate our boy babies by whittling away a part of their penis."
I just don't understand why Paul wrote this part about homosexuals here. It just seems out of place as much as the Kansas Baptist going to military funerals and condemning homosexuals for the death of military people fighting in the war against terrorist. I read a great deal about pagan temple orgies when I wrote the novel, Red Heifer. They were gruesome. When the new priests were initiated they were required to cut off their sexual organs with a stone knife so they could become male temple prostitutes.
http://search.earthlink.net/search?q...rea=earthlink- This link takes you to the Attis and Cybele cult worship rituals.

STUDY IN THE BOOK OF ROMANS

ATTEMPT TO STUDY BOOK OF ROMANS .. DODD. Charles Harold Dodd (7 April 1884-21 September 1973) was a Welsh New Testament scholar and influential Protestant theologian. He was born in Wrexham, the brother of the historian A. H. Dodd. He studied classics at the University of Oxford from 1902. After graduating in 1906 he spent a year in Berlin, where he was influenced by Adolf Harnack. He was a Congregationalist minister for three years in Warwick, after being ordained in 1912, before going into academia. From 1915 he was Yates Lecturer in New Testament at Oxford. He became Rylands Professor at the University of Manchester in 1930. He was Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge from 1935, becoming emeritus in 1949.He directed the work of the New English Bible team, from 1950.

PROOFS OF JESUS spong

Richard from the Internet writes:
"Is there any material proof of any sort whatsoever that the man Jesus ever lived at all? So many things are attributed to him that sometimes I think he is a fantasy figure people make up in their minds, endowing him with more capabilities that the fiction hero Superman had that prompts me to wonder if that's all he was, a make-believe figure, like the action hero, Zorro, who was inspired by the life of a real 19th century person."

Dear Richard,

This question is asked regularly but since it keeps coming up I will try once more to speak to it. The problem is not that there is no evidence to support the historicity of Jesus, because there is. The difficulty arises because so much mythology has been laid on the historic figure of Jesus that he has become unbelievable to many.
First, the data about his historicity. Paul writing to the Galatians around the year 51 C.E. chronicles his activities, including his consultations with Peter and others who were called by Paul "the pillars" of the Christian movement. This means that Paul knew Peter and others who were the disciples of the Jesus of history. Paul says that this meeting took place three years after his conversion (see Galatians 1:18-24). The best evidence that has been amassed to date the conversion of Paul was done by a 19th century church historian named Adolf Harnack, who places it no earlier than one year and no more than six years after the crucifixion. So Paul was in touch with disciples of Jesus within 4 to 10 years after the crucifixion. These disciples did not think of Jesus as a fantasy or a mythical person. Indeed myths take far longer than 4 to 10 years to develop. There is thus ample data to support the historicity of the man Jesus. Paul would hardly have given his life to a myth.

There are other things that are so counter-intuitive about the way the Jesus story has been told that to me they constitute compelling additional evidence for his historicity. One is that Jesus is said to have come out of Nazareth, a dirty, petty and insignificant town that had a dreadful reputation. It was said even in the New Testament that people asked "can anything good come out of Nazareth" (see John 1:46)? His Nazareth and Galilean origins were an embarrassment to the Jesus movement. No one creates a myth that will embarrass them. It was undoubtedly this embarrassment that helped to create the myth of his birth in Bethlehem. One does not try to escape a lowly place of origin unless that place is so deeply a part of the person's identity that it cannot be suppressed. Jesus of Nazareth was a person of history.

Another counter-intuitive piece of data is that Jesus began his public life as a disciple of John the Baptist. John was originally the teacher that Jesus followed. That is why the gospels seem compelled to have John say constantly things like: "He must increase, I must decrease." "After me comes one whose shoelaces I am not worthy to tie." Luke goes so far as to have the fetus of John the Baptist leap to salute the fetus of Jesus before either was born. When people try to alter history it is not because there is no history, it is because the reality of history has caused embarrassment. The early Christians worked hard to prove that though John was older, he was quite secondary, the one who "prepared the way."

The third fact in the life of Jesus, to which we can point as history, is that Jesus was crucified. The Christian movement had to find a way to understand and even to celebrate his death, which ran counter to everything they believed about a messiah. If they could not transform his crucifixion, there would have been no resurrection. Indeed the resurrection was the story of that transformation. That took hard work. They did not do that by making up the story of the crucifixion. His death was real. The interpretation of his death as the gateway to life made the Christian faith possible.

Mythology was surely added to the Jesus of history even in the writings of the gospels, but those myths were placed on the back of a real person. Mark, writing in the 8th decade, said that at his baptism the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit poured out on him. Then Mark said that after his crucifixion that the grave could not contain him.

In the ninth decade, Matthew added such details to the growing mythology as the miraculous birth, the heavenly star, the wise men, and the physiological appearances of the raised Jesus. Some five to ten years after Matthew, Luke added to the developing story such parts of our tradition as the shepherds, the swaddling cloths and the appearances of the angels. Later he intensified the physical character of the resurrection until it became resuscitation back into the life of this world, which in turn necessitated his eventual escape from this earth in the story of the cosmic ascension. Still later John identified him with the Word of God spoken in creation. As these mythological layers were laid on top of him, his humanity began to fade. That is where the faith crisis of today emerges. We have begun to strip away the mythology, and as we do we begin to fear that there is nothing under it. So we hesitate and even pretend to believe what, when pressed, we would say we no longer believe. Many of the fundamentalist churches are made up of pretenders who reveal their vulnerability by getting angry whenever they are forced to face the game that they are playing. There is, I believe, another way. I am now convinced that only by recovering the full humanity of Jesus is there any possibility of seeing the meaning of his divinity. That is the dominant theme of my next book JESUS FOR THE NON-RELIGIOUS, which will be out in March of 2007. I see it as a radical restatement of the earliest Christian proclamation that in the human Jesus, the holy God has been encountered. I look forward to the debate and the dialogue that I hope this book will engender.

-- John Shelby Spong

Nashville Scene - Nothing Sacred

Nashville Scene - Nothing Sacred: "

December 1, 2005

The Author

Joseph Sweat

.Nothing Sacred
Author, civil rights activist and Baptist minister Will Campbell is friend to Klansmen, whores and the hopeless but he rejects the soul molesters of the Southern Baptist Convention
by Joseph Sweat
photos by Eric England
Writer and renegade preacher Will D. A religion that has been dead for centuries has been brought to light in The Da Vinci Code. Gnostic, the doctrine of salvation by knowledge. This definition, based on the etymology of the word (gnosis "knowledge", gnostikos, "good at knowing"), is correct as far as it goes, but it gives only one, though perhaps the predominant, characteristic of Gnostic systems of thought. Whereas Judaism and Christianity, and almost all pagan systems, hold that the soul attains its proper end by obedience of mind and will to the Supreme Power, i.e. by faith and works, it is markedly peculiar to Gnosticism that it places the salvation of the soul merely in the possession of a quasi-intuitive knowledge of the mysteries of the universe and of magic formulae indicative of that knowledge. Gnostics were "people who knew", and their knowledge at once constituted them a superior class of beings, whose present and future status was essentially different from that of those who, for whatever reason, did not know. A more complete and historical definition of Gnosticism would be:
A collective name for a large number of greatly-varying and pantheistic-idealistic sects, which flourished from some time before the Christian Era down to the fifth century, and which, while borrowing the phraseology and some of the tenets of the chief religions of the day, and especially of Christianity, held matter to be a deterioration of spirit, and the whole universe a depravation of the Deity, and taught the ultimate end of all being to be the overcoming of the grossness of matter and the return to the Parent-Spirit, which return they held to be inaugurated and facilitated by the appearance of some God-sent Saviour.
However unsatisfactory this definition may be, the obscurity, multiplicity, and wild confusion of Gnostic systems will hardly allow of another. Many scholars, moreover, would hold that every attempt to give a generic description of Gnostic sects is labour lost. (Catholic Encyclopedia)
Brown has taken the tenets of this rival of orthodox Christianity and presented it in a page-turning novel. With the aid of old scrolls found in the Nag Hammadi Library and da Vinci’s painting of the Lost Supper wherein the Apostle John is what appears to be a blonde headed woman sitting to the right of Jesus, the novel turns into a cloak and dagger affair. A high-ranking member of the Catholic Church feels honor bound to destroy ancient documents that will lead to a descendent of Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Murder and some pretty top secret detective work fills the novel with suspense. Whether the high intense interest in the reading of this novel will bring the revival of ancient Gnosticism remains to be seen.
Most importantly, will this novel prove that descendents of Mary and Jesus should be the Pope in Rome instead of the spiritual descendents of the Apostle Peter? Many died because of this question.

Christian-Universalism.com > Do you know the REAL Jesus Christ?

I'm in the process of figuring out hell in the New Testament. Did he preach that hell is eternal, a place of never-ending torture where the damned will writhe and scream in agony in the flames -- forever? Was the faith of Jesus a depressing and terrifying religion that teaches that billions of people will be condemned to everlasting torment? Hell, NO! Such ideas are unbiblical and wrong. The Jesus of 'fundamentalist' Christianity is not the real Jesus, but a religious idol. I am a chemical engineer by trade and my best friend is a Russian Orthodox minister. What do you think Jesus would think of Christianity, as it exists today? He started the process with a tightly wound ball of ideas for living a counter-cultural lifestyle in a very difficult time in history. Since then those wonderful ideas have "snowballed" for over two thousand years and are now a huge mass called the Christian Church. Some things I think Jesus would like. But other things, particularly the elitism of each sect that only they have the true "keys to the kingdom" would upset him. This scientist and priest would like to hear your answer."

Dear Don,

Neither I nor anyone else is competent to speak for Jesus. I do believe, however, it is the Church's duty to measure itself from time to time against the one it honors as its founder.
His life was powerful because he gave it away. Institutional Christianity seems obsessed with accumulating power. His love knew no limits and rejected no one. Over its history the Church has discriminated against Gentiles, women, people of color, left handed people, mentally ill people and homosexual people.

He invited all to come to him and the Church has participated in religious wars, crusades, inquisitions and anti-Semitism. The one redeeming reality of church life is that we do seem to have the power to reform ourselves from time to time. Reformation is what keeps us a living body. The need for reformation has never been greater.

-- John Shelby Spong

type='text'>

Dr. Gerald Neuberg via the Internet writes:
"I think you could be a tremendous bridge builder, bringing a diverse people together under your "call to become more fully human." Your critique of Christianity, however, begs the question, where are you headed with this? Your views seem almost secular, more rational than even the Unitarians but more spiritual than Ethical Culture (which from my experience seems a bit lifeless). Your ministry is so inclusive that I'm sure you could build a global following of people who want a spiritual home free from the divisive myths of the past, who might agree that Jesus was a great, if not the greatest, philosopher and example, but not the only one worth building a way of life around. So it seems you're pointing to a global movement or alliance distinct from Christianity that is too exclusive. Will it have a name? "
Dear Dr. Neuberg,
What you suggest I am doing sounds very impressive. So much so that I have a hard time embracing it. However, I have no ambitions to begin a new movement that needs a name, though I appreciate your attribution to me of that and other noble goals.
I simply try to combine two things. First, my identity as a Christian who finds Jesus a doorway into the transcendence and wonder of God and second, my citizenship in the 21st century which means that I cannot think as a 1st century Christian, the time in which the Bible was written; a 4th century Christian, the time in which the creeds were formed; a13th century Christian, the time in which current liturgies took shape or a 16th century Christian, the time in which the Reformation occurred. I must be a 21st century Christian. That means I have to force my Christian faith into the thought forms dictated by the 21st century. In the process much of the traditional understanding of Christianity, shaped as it was by the mindset of the 1st Century must inevitably be sacrificed as no longer either relevant or possible.
I draw a distinction between the experience of God and the explanation of that experience. The experience of God is, I believe, both real and timeless. The explanation of that experience, however, is always time bound and time warped. Explanations, because they are always wedded to their time will also and inevitably die. That should be expected.
I see nothing in history that causes me to believe that anyone can start a new religion. I see much that indicates that new religious forms always emerge out of old concepts. The tendency of religious institutions is to suppress all change. This will be the death knell of the Christian faith.
The Christianity I profess is radically inclusive. There are no barriers, no boundaries. It is a journey into the mystery of God without a road map.
I'm glad to have you as a fellow traveler.
-- John Shelby Spong

CoH GOOD News - Weekly Email

CoH GOOD News - Weekly Email

President Bush as Messiah president

Tuesday, October 04, 2005
Michael Ortiz Hill: George Bush's Messianic Complex

Michael Ortiz Hill: George Bush's Messianic Complex: "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory
Bush's Armageddon Obsession, Revisited
by MICHAEL ORTIZ HILL
'We are lived by forces we scarcely understand,' wrote W.H. Auden. What forces live us now as America again torques toward war?
George W. Bush is certainly the plaything of such forces as the geopolitics of oil but it seems that he is susceptible to other even darker archetypal concerns. Let me be blunt. The man is delusional and the shape of his delusion is specifically apocalyptic in belief and intent. That Bush would attack so many vital systems on so many fronts from foreign policy to the environment may seem confusing from the point of view of realpolitik but becomes transparent in terms of the apocalyptic worldview to which he subscribes. All systems are supposed to go down so the Messiah can come and Bush, seemingly, has taken on the role of the one who brings this to pass.
The Reverend Billy Graham taught Bush to live in anticipation of the Second Coming but it was his friendship with Dr. Tony Evans that shaped Bush's political understanding of how to deport himself in an apocalyptic era.
